Romantic Horror Movies For Valentine’s Day [LIST]

Valentine’s Day is actually quite the violent holiday. Think about it? We decorate everything with hearts which are often pierced with arrows and decorate everything in red. Here are some scary alternatives to the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation. And stay tuned for an alternative list for those of us who are decidedly more bitter this time of year.

Bride Of Chucky: Chucky gets lucky with this sequel to the Child’s Play films. Introducing Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) to the franchise along with a healthy dose of comedy, this slasher tells the story of two star crossed lovers who end up unwittingly transporting the killer dolls cross country.

Edward Scissorhands: Tim Burton’s classic story of the scissorhanded creation who finds love in the sub-urbs is the most overtly romantic of his films but his filmography offers something for everyone in the way of romance. If Edward isn’t gory enough check out Sweeney Todd or Sleepy Hollow.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Of all the different iterations of Stoker’s classic tale, this remains one of the best. It is also the best adaptation with regards to the romantic themes of the novel. Adding the subplot of Mina being the reincarnation of his dead wife gives the plot a romantic plot which feels organic to the lush and detailed production.

Little Shop Of Horrors: The musical tale of a man eating plant from outer-space also happens to be an incredibly beautiful love story between Audrey and Seymour with complications provided by her sadistic dentist boyfriend and his killer plant. Featuring some of the best puppet work ever it’s the perfect fun movie for a romantic night. And if your Valentine’s Day takes a dark turn you can always watch the Director’s Cut which keeps the original ending in which Seymour feeds Audrey’s dead body to the plant and then heads to the roof to contemplate suicide.

Slither: How can a movie about slugs that take over your body be romantic? Just trust me James Gunn manages to deliver a touching story of love wrapped in thousands of pounds of goo. It’s the perfect alternative romance without any of the bitterness.

Let The Right One In: A romantic movie that is equal parts sad, uplifting, heart breaking and mind blowing. One of the greatest vampire films ever. It tells the story of an alternative romance between a young boy and the vampire who lives next door.
