American Mary [REVIEW]

I quit med school today – Mary

Two genres of horror I never thought would come together in 2012 were rape revenge and body horror. Yet in the new film from Canadian writer/directors The Soska Sisters starring Katherine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Freddy VS Jason) the two are perfectly blended in what will surely be a cult film for years to come.

American Mary tells the story of Mary, a med student struggling to pay the bills while studying to be a surgeon. Willing to do just about anything to make her dreams come true and faced with plenty of ignored calls from the student loan office, she answers an online ad to be a stripper. Obviously over qualified to shake her tits on stage, Mary shows up with a full resume and ends up being enlisted as a surgeon rather then pole dancer. The owner of the club offers her 5 thousand to stitch someone up and she won’t have to take off her clothes. In desperate need of the money she takes the offer. Afterwards she starts getting strange calls and eventually a woman shows up serving full on Betty Boop and offering a big wad of cash money for Dr. Mary to perform underground surgeries. Still staring down a stack of bills and student loan payments she is eventually convinced to go ahead with the surgery.

When her attending invites her to a party, drugs her and rapes her, Mary’s life takes a dark and terrifying turn. I won’t get into the plot beyond that. But I will say that I have not enjoyed a horror flick as much as I enjoyed this movie in quite some time. It is at points flawed but it serves up shock and horror in ways which is rarely done today in horror. You will find yourself routing for Mary despite her often questionable actions and Katherine Isabelle’s performance is outstanding. am so glad to see her back in genre fair. Great effects, beautifully shot and Beatress serves Audrey from Little Shop Of Horrors as plastic surgery junkie stripper.  I  Definitely check this flick out if you have the chance.

  1. Very good blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go
for a paid option? There are so many options out
there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any recommendations?
